]]> In the midst of Burger Bash, with all the frolicking and feasting, it’s important to remember the goal: donating to Feed Nova Scotia.

Feed Nova Scotia is a vital charity in the province. It distributes food to 140 different food banks, shelters and meal programs.

Annually, it donates approximately three million kilograms of food to its members.

Burger Bash has become the largest fundraising event for Feed Nova Scotia, outside of its own efforts. Over the last 10 years, Burger Bash has raised $760,000 for the charity.

“People appreciate the event so deeply. It’s an event all about community engagement,” said Karen Theriault, director of development at Feed Nova Scotia.

“The restaurants and staff all work so hard and the community comes out to support them and the event. It’s really a thrill to see every year.”

This year in particular, the money will make a huge impact. The number of Nova Scotians relying on food banks is up 23 per cent from previous years.

“These aren’t just numbers, these are people,” says Theriault.

Theriault wants to make it clear that this year, the money isn’t just going to purchasing and distributing food—it’s going to advocacy as well.

“Food is not the solution to food insecurity,” she says, “systemic change is.”

Theriault says a portion of the funds will go toward campaigns for affordable housing, affordable childcare, disability support, income assistance and other root causes of food insecurity.

“There’s a lot of work to be done [on] food insecurity, but the donation we’re expecting from Burger Bash this year will be a really important push for us. It always is,” says Theriault.

Pineapple Bytes provides software for the hospitality industry, helping manage money and reduce waste. Restaurants all over Atlantic Canada rely on its 24 hour service. 

This year, Pineapple Bytes wants to give back with donations to Feed Nova Scotia.

“The restaurant industry makes Pineapple Bytes what it is. By helping with Burger Bash, we get to support local restaurants and help donate to Feed Nova Scotia,” said Greg Corey, general manager of Pineapple Bytes.

Pickford and Black, a client of Pineapple Bytes, is doing a pineapple burger this year: the Pineapple Express. It’s $19, and $2 from every burger goes to Feed Nova Scotia.

“We will be matching Pickford and Black’s donation to Feed Nova Scotia at the end of Burger Bash,” said Corey.

The Pineapple Bytes team went out to Pickford and Black for lunch and gave the Pineapple Express burger a try. 

“Pineapple Bytes and Burger Bash is a great partnership. A perfect way to get people to restaurants after a difficult few years in hospitality,” Corey said.

@ddavies2020 is a hero of Burger Bash, a legend, for lack of a better term—a burger king.

Yeah Yeahs’ Big Mac Slice is the least-expensive item on the menu at Burger Bash. It’s a honking slice of Yeah Yeahs pizza smothered in Big Mac inspired toppings. Don’t think it’s a burger? Get two and sandwich them together! Served at both the Dartmouth and the Halifax Yeah Yeahs locations.

Achiote Burger at Pete’s Frootique Halifax, $6

This burger patty is flavoured with an achiote marinade and topped with Monterey Jack cheese, spicy slaw and roasted red pepper aioli. 

Local Wagyu Burger at Pete’s Frootique Bedford, $8

Over the past two years restaurants and their staff have changed, adapted, closed, reopened all while continuing to offer the best hospitality and service out there. Halifax Burger Bash is the perfect time to show your love for your tried and true favourite spot and welcome new restaurants into your life. 

During Halifax Burger Bash, and all year long, here are a few tips to be on your burger bash best behaviour!

  • Treat all restaurant staff with respect. They’re working hard so you can have a burgeriffic good time. Our best tip is to leave a tip!

  • Be patient, if there is a line at a restaurant leave your name with staff enjoy the outdoors or head to the next spot on your list!

  • Tag us in photos @hfxburgerbash, And tag the restaurant too, we all want to feel the love!

  • Restrictions have been lifted province wide, however if a restaurant has certain safety measures in place respect those! Everyone is doing their best to keep their staff and customers staff and comfortable! 

  • Be Kind. It’s really that simple.

To make sure you’re able to make the most of your burger buck we asked the experts over at Assante Capital Management Ltd.  Brad Compton, an Investment Advisor with Assante Capital Management Ltd, gave us tips and tricks to ensure your belly and bank account are equally full for Halifax Burger Bash. 

Bring a Burger Bash Budget

It may sound simple, but “… a lot of times people don’t have a firm grasp on where their money is going.” Brad states. The golden rule coming from Assante is to “plan, update and stick to a budget.” 

Budgeting can sound like an arduous task, but there are tools there to help. Brad recommends using budgeting software or even downloading a budget app on your phone!

The Triple B (Building Burger Balance)

We all like to treat ourselves, think of the classic coffee conundrum, to buy or make it home! When it comes to finances, “A lot of us know our big things, like a mortgage, car payments, phone bill, etc. But for some, knowing where the “small” stuff goes makes a difference”. 

Brad notes that “for some people fun events that come with a cost become a matter of ‘or’ and not ‘and’. For the ‘or’s’ reading, being conscious of the small things will be crucial”. Making coffee and lunch at home during the bash may help to ensure you can take in these once-a-year creations!

]]> Proedge Elite Training is home to some of the top personal trainers in the HRM. Their team wants to make sure you’re ready to take in any and all the best parts of Burger Bash. They’ve helped compile a list of tips to get your Burger Bod Bash-ready. 

In case it doesn’t go without saying, every body is a burger body. These tips are here to help the boldest of burger bashers prepare for 10 jam-packed days of burgers. Take what feels good for your body and leave what doesn’t serve you. Burger Bash is a judgment free zone. We want to break burger barriers, not add them.

LEGS 

Starting with our foundation, the legs help many of us get from one burger to the next. With our burgers spreading across corners of the city, preparing our legs can help us take in more burgers and cut out travel time. 

Prior to the bash, map your route and walk the distance. Get your finest, functional footwear at the ready to make sure it’s a comfy commute. 

Shea Lenehan suggests getting in some squats to help take on some of the actual uphill battles that are present in downtown Halifax. Make lunchtime, lunge time to boost your strength because these downtown hills aren’t getting any flatter!

CORE

Trainer Will Silver says you can loosen up your core by touching your toes or incorporating a twist into your pre-burger game plan. Loosening up your core will help prep your burger belly and prime for some hearty burgers and belly laughs with your burger buddies. 

ARMS 

Ahhh, the arms. The vessel that brings the burg from plate to face.  Bolstering your prep routine with some Burger Bash bicep curls will help buff your burger biceps for the bulkiest of burgs and make that motion so familiar you’ll set your mind on autopilot and let your body do the rest. MIND 

Arguably, the most important muscle to get in shape, the mind. With over 130 listings to choose from, you’ll need a clear mind to decide which burger to try next. 

Go for a walk, laugh with friends or indulge in your favourite pastime to find your state of burger bliss. This Burger Bash we want to keep our minds clear and our bellies full.
